Wow, what a year 2020 has been, and we are only half way through it. But with the second half of this year comes some new laws which go into effect starting today and they are:
- LGBTQ History must be taught in public schools - good move, perhaps teaching the history will help those who have a problem accepting the lifestyle understand it better.
- Minimum wage has increased to $10 for the state of Illinois and $14 in the city of Chicago. In my opinion this is a small step forward, but we have found out that essential workers are making these wages and if they are so essential, shouldn't they earn more than this?
- The gas tax has doubled, from 19 cents per gallon to 38 cents per gallon - ouch, that's going to hurt those of us who drive a lot.
- Your drivers license cannot be suspended for failing to pay a fine. Smart move because drivers license suspensions should involve an offense that is related to road safety, and not because someone didn't return a library book.
