Landmark Status for Emmett Till's Chicago Home

Emmett Till’s home on the South Side has been granted preliminary landmark status.

We talked a couple of weeks ago about the push to recognize the importance of the home at 6427 S. St. Lawrence. It's been going on for years but the 65th anniversary of his murder and the protests for justice this summer gave the petition more momentum.

And the recognition by the Commission on Chicago Landmarks came on Thursday – the same day that Emmett Till’s open-casket funeral was held in 1955.

65 years later, the Till family is finally getting some semblance of justice and acknowledgement of his brutal murder that marked a critical moment and acted as a catalyst for the Civil Rights Movement. Amen to that.
