With all due respect to teachers and school staff, I think our children should go back into the classroom.
I had a conversation with a mother of two children, ages 9 and 12 who said she really wants her children back in school because they are not learning properly through remote learning. She and her husband try very hard to supplement their learning by teaching them as well and it is becoming increasingly difficult to do so.
Recently Mayor Lightfoot said that our black and brown students are being negatively affected by not being in a classroom setting. Absenteeism is high. Some students cannot grasp learning remotely. This is a problem not only now, but could potentially affect students years from now. The mayor also said Chicago Public Schools has spent more than $70 million on making schools safe -- shouldn't that be somewhat of an incentive to return to the classroom?
Hopefully CPS and the Chicago Teachers Union can come to an agreement that will benefit our children in the best way. I'm really starting to get worried about the education of our future.
