Black People Magic: RIP DMX

Today, our Black People Magic honors the memory of Earl Simmons, known as DMX, who passed away yesterday at the age of 50 after suffering a heart attack last week. Def Jam, his longtime label, called him “Nothing less than a giant.”

DMX was a gifted rapper and actor who also had a long struggle with substance abuse and related legal issues. He still leaves a legacy of his music, talent and inspiration. For all the gruffness in his voice, he was creative, honest and kind – inspiring millions even while he was suffering with his own troubles.

My favorite DMX memory is when I was in Vegas with my cousin and we were rushing to see George Wallace and ran into DMX in the casino. We ran into him later, got a chance to catch up and take photos… and he was like, don’t post it because I’m not supposed to be here. Upfront, honest but still kind and a man of his word.

Roxanne Shante posted an emotional and beautiful tribute to DMX to Instagram, sharing where some of his troubles came from and talked about the grace we need to extend to everyone, especially in their time of need. Watch the whole video below... & have your tissue ready because it will touch your heart.

Share your memories of your favorite DMX songs, concerts and stories on Facebook, Instagram & Twitter @v103chicago & @jmsparrow.

& Remember to always celebrate your magic! xo
