Just in time for Black History Month, Barbie has announced the release of a new doll that reflects Chicago Black People Magic!
This week, Barbie officially announced the launch of their Bessie Coleman doll, as part of the “Inspiring Women” series, honoring her on her birthday, January 26th.
Coleman was the first Black and Native American female pilot, and her success inspired other pilots of color to earn their wings. She lived here in Chicago and her aspirations to become a trained pilot were encouraged by Robert S. Abbott, founder and publisher of the Chicago Defender, who publicized her efforts in the paper.
Barbie is also partnering with Bessie Coleman Aviation All-Stars – a nonprofit founded by Gigi Coleman, Bessie's great-niece, that educates students, introduces them to careers in aviation and encourages them to explore careers in STEM and aeronautics.
Gigi Coleman said she’s honored by Barbie’s tribute, and how it will expand her great aunt’s legacy, saying, “We hope through this doll more people will discover Bessie’s story and be inspired.”
& Remember to always celebrate your magic! xo
