Black People Magic: Skye P. Marshall, Chicago Native & Star of "Matlock"

Congratulations to actress and Chicago native Skye P. Marshall on the premiere earlier this week of her starring role on the new CBS drama “Matlock” with Kathy Bates!

Skye was born here in the Uptown neighborhood, then her family moved away, only to return after hitting tough times. She said her mother would always say they’d live in a house again someday, but they never quite got there.

Meantime, Skye started her performing career, dancing with hip-hop troupes—and even performed with one of them as opening acts for Missy Elliott and Lil’ Kim. She was later prom queen and went to college thanks to her service in the U.S. Air Force. She studied theater and acting just as a hobby and got on the corporate track after she graduated, but still took classes in her spare time.

After two years in that corporate job, she risked it all and moved to Hollywood to pursue her dreams. She finally got her starring role in Matlock earlier this year, married fellow actor Edwin Hodge this summer… and bought her mom Patricia the home she always wanted in Oak Lawn.

Check out Skye as Olivia Lawrence on Matlock, Thursdays at 8pm on CBS.

& Remember to always celebrate your magic! xo
