Chicago Orders Demolition of E2 Nightclub Building

The building that was once home to nightclub E2—and had earlier housed many other iconic nightclubs over the years like La Mirage, Heroes, and the Clique—is now torn down.

The city’s Department of Buildings issued an emergency demolition order this Tuesday after they found several serious safety issues during an inspection late last month. This was a reversal of the decision to protect the 124-year-old building, which was part of historic Motor Row on South Michigan Avenue.

Future plans for that property include a senior housing development and a memorial to honor victims of the 2003 E2 Nightclub tragedy, that took the lives of 21 people in a stampede during a fire.
