Black People Magic: New American Idol Jamal Roberts

Congratulations to Jamal Roberts who made history on Thursday, becoming the first Black man to win American Idol in 22 years, since Ruben Studdard won the 2nd season in 2003.

The third time was the charm for the 27-year-old who became an instant fan favorite after singing Rick James’ Mary Jane at his audition and getting a ticket to Hollywood with yesses from won all three judges. And according to American Idol host Ryan Seacrest, viewers cast nearly 26 million votes this year, breaking last year’s record.

Roberts is a P.E. teacher from Meridian, Mississippi, a role he told USA Today was “rooted in purpose more than a paycheck… I wasn’t really doing the teaching thing for the money. It was really the kids, (who are) just my inspiration.” Roberts is also a proud girl dad of 3 daughters: Harmoni, 6, Lyrik, 4, and newborn Gianna, who arrived just days before his win.

“American Idol” has crowned only a handful of Black winners in its history: Ruben Studdard, Fantasia Barrino, Jordin Sparks, Candice Glover, Just Sam — and now Jamal Roberts.

& Remember to always celebrate your magic! xo
