Community Connect: Free Workouts & Arts in our Neighborhoods

Community Connect is here to hook you up and help you out with resources you can use… this week, it's all about staying fit and keeping our communities in good shape, too.

Millennium Park’s summer workout series started last Saturday and will run every Saturday through August 30th on the Great Lawn & Wrigley Square in Millennium Park (201 E. Randolph Street), from 8-11:45am. Admission is free and workouts include pilates, yoga, cardio kickboxing and Zumba classes. Participants are asked to bring their own workout mat and American Sign Language interpretation is also available upon request, by emailing the department at dcase@cityofchicago.org.

And congratulations to Alt Space Chicago, the arts-focused nonprofit serving Chicago’s Black communities, on their recently-opened hub on the West Side in the former Austin Bank Building (5654 W. Corcoran Place). It’s called the House Collective and is home to a group of five community nonprofits and 10 artists-in-residence dedicated to revitalizing the community. The space will host community meetings, monthly volunteer events, economic empowerment and art programs.

Members of the collective include Earth Paint, an Austin-based recycled paint organization supporting youth and adults with disabilities; Earth’s Remedies, an organization dedicated to connecting West Side families with developmental resources; and Root2Fruit Youth Foundation, an Austin-based empowerment organization for people ages 14-21. Remember, our community moves forward in the best way possible when we all get the help we need and give the help we can!
