Black People Magic: Celebrating the Baker of the South Side's Viral Donuts

Yesterday was National Donut Day and today we celebrate Burritt Bulloch, the 86-year old owner of Old Fashioned Donuts in Roseland, a longtime staple in the community who is now a viral sensation on TikTok, thanks to his granddaughter Leda Edwards, who recorded him doing what he’s been doing everyday since 1972. The video now has over 1.5 million views.

Mr. Bulloch’s regulars call him the “Donut King” or “Mr. B” and he said his main focus will always be serving the community first. He ran the business with his wife Mamie until she passed away in 2009, and his two daughters continue to work with him now.

His shop is well-known for its hand-cut doughnuts that sell out almost every day to his regulars and since Leda’s video went viral, Mr. Bulloch says, “… because of my granddaughter, there’s been a lot of strange faces in here, a lot of people coming from all over.”

If you want to taste an Old Fashioned Donut, go soon because the store will be temporarily closed for renovations for several months starting in mid-June. When his granddaughter asked him what he would do with his time off, he said he’ll go fishing.

& Remember to always celebrate your magic! xo
