Community Connect: Woodson Library Anniversary & Night Out in the Parks

Community Connect hooks you up and helps you out with resources you can use… this week, it's all about free Chicago entertainment and celebrations!

Today, Woodson Regional Library (9525 S. Halsted Street) celebrates its 50th anniversary! They’re highlighting their exhibit, “1919 Red Summer Shadows,” today at 1pm in a special discussion with renowned Chicago historian Shermann “Dilla” Thomas, covering the impact of the 1919 Chicago Race Riots on our city to this day. There will also be a screening of the PBS special, “The Future of America’s Past: Red Chicago.” This event is free but registration is required online here.

  • And the Chicago Park District is bringing free entertainment to the neighborhood with their Night Out in the Parks program… Cheryl Corley and Lucy Smith share the words and music of two of our city’s most gifted and celebrated artists in “Chicago’s Soul: The Words and Music of Gwendolyn Brooks and Curtis Mayfield” in free performances this summer at:
    July 26th at Sherman Park, 1301 W. 52nd Street,
  • August 15th at Warren Park, 6601 N. Western Avenue,
  • September 13th at Garfield Park, 100 North Central Park Avenue.

The Night Out in the Parks program presents cultural events year-round in neighborhood parks throughout the city to amplify the artistic and cultural vibrancy in every neighborhood.

Remember, our community moves forward in the best way possible when we all get the help we need and give the help we can!
