Black People Magic: Leo High School Boys Choir on AGT

Congratulations to the Leo High School Boys Choir, who advanced to the semifinals this Wednesday on America’s Got Talent! They performed Believer by Imagine Dragons in the quarterfinals on Tuesday night and impressed the judges and viewers to get the votes to move forward.

Choir Director LaDonna Hill, who retired this year after 25 years at Leo, stood by the judges table leading and cheering as the boys performed then crying when they advanced to the next round. Simon Cowell said he had a “really good feeling” about the choir, and was also impressed by LaDonna Hill, saying she should not be retiring, which made her cry even more.

When they were in California waiting for the results of the voting Wednesday, she said she felt a burst of joy and gratitude for what the 18-member choir has been able to accomplish together. She’s also thankful for the parents, the Leo High School community and her “own personal community and village.”

Hill said the boys have been dedicated to their twice-weekly rehearsals and a variety of other shows in Chicago since they were invited by the show to audition in March, including a ceremony for the new pope and a Wrigley Field performance. She said they want to win but also want to shine a spotlight on Chicago so “…people to remember that there is still good coming out of our community, and this is a reminder.”
