Black People Magic Pays Tribute to Chicago House Music Legend Ron Carroll

Sending love and light to the family, friends and fans legendary house music DJ, songwriter and producer Ron Carroll, who passed away last Sunday morning of a heart attack.

As a teenager, Ron was a fan of the rock band Kiss but got into house music when he went to a high school dance and spent time watching the DJ perform.

He was an alum of South Shore High School and became known as a DJ in a club he opened in the late ’80s. His first official release was My Prayer, produced by Hula of the Outhere Brothers, Kay Fingers and Ron Trent. His big break came in 1994 at a music conference in Miami when he met Louis Vega, who gave him a chance to write the lyrics to Barbara Tucker’s I Get Lifted and he worked with Mike Dunn and Byron Stingley, also from the Chicago house scene.

People were shocked at the news of his passing, especially since Ron had just been at a birthday party the night before (last Saturday) with many industry people and other friends… Chicago social media has been in a frenzy all week with tributes to his life and work.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, October 2nd at The Haven (932 E. 43rd Street) at noon, with a celebration of life afterward. (flyer below)

Remember to always celebrate your magic! xo
