Black People Magic: Celebrating Time100 Next Honoree Rev. Marshall Hatch Jr

Congratulations to the magic of Chicago’s own Reverend Marshall Hatch Jr.! The minister, community advocate, and leader of the MAAFA Redemption Project was recently named to the Time100 Next list—Time Magazine’s list of up-and-coming artists, leaders, innovators, and advocates.

He leads New Mount Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church in West Garfield Park and was chosen for his dedication to improving the lives of Black and Brown young adults in the area.

Rev. Hatch is also building a center for arts and activism and works as the executive director of his church’s social justice ministry, and the MAAFA Redemption Project, a faith-based initiative aimed at providing a “second chance to at risk emerging adult men,” providing job training, housing, and mentorship for Black men in West Garfield Park. The project lasts for nine months and includes housing, employment, educational opportunities, and evidence-based wrap-around social services.

Reverend Al Sharpton wrote about Reverend Hatch for Time’s list, saying he saw him growing up while working with his father, faith leader Marshall Hatch Sr. And when he was asked what the honor means to him, Rev. Hatch responded with one word: ubuntu. The ancient African phrase translates to, “I am, because we are,” which he said emphasizes his commitment to community.

The Time100 Next ceremony will be next Thursday, October 30th in New York.

& Remember to always celebrate your magic! xo
