Health Workers Who Oppose Abortion Get New Protections

The Trump administration has created a new division in the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) called the Conscience and Religious Freedom Division. According to a press release, the new division "has been established to restore federal enforcement of our nation’s laws that protect the fundamental and unalienable rights of conscience and religious freedom." According to ABC News, the new division will protect the rights of healthcare workers who are morally or religiously opposed to abortion or certain forms of birth control.

Acting Secretary of HHS Eric Hargan made the announcement on Thursday (January 18) saying that the new division upholds President Trump's campaign promise to protect the religious freedoms of Americans.

President Trump promised the American people that his administration would vigorously uphold the rights of conscience and religious freedom. That promise is being kept today. The Founding Fathers knew that a nation that respects conscience rights is more diverse and more free, and OCR’s new division will help make that vision a reality.

The announcement comes as the 2018 March for Life begins. The pro-life groups that organize the annual march are holding a conference on Thursday and will host their annual march on the National Mall on Friday. President Trump will deliver a speech via satellite to the crowd.
