Wells Fargo Glitch Clears Out Bank Accounts Of Some Customers

Wells Fargo is apologizing to customers and promising to quickly refund any fees and charges following a glitch that resulted in the bank accounts of some customers being completely drained. According to CNN, the glitch caused the bank to make double-payments on online bills. Wells Fargo explained that the glitch was caused by an "internal processing error" that caused "temporary double posting of some items." The bank said the glitch was fixed Wednesday night and people should see the money returned to their accounts.

Many customers were alerted immediately that their accounts were empty or had a negative balance, and quickly reached out to customer service. According to the Austin Statesmen, so many people were calling that customers had to wait on hold for hours to speak with somebody to resolve the issue.

Wells Fargo communications manager Hilary O’Byrne said that no action was required by the customers, and that their accounts would be fixed by Thursday. She said that any overdraft fees and charges would be refunded.

We are currently working to correct it, and there is no action required for impacted customers at this time. Any fees or charges that may have been incurred as a result of this error will be taken care of. We apologize for any inconvenience.

The glitch comes as the bank is trying to shake off negative publicity after reports last year said workers created millions of fake bank accounts in an attempt to meet unrealistic sales goals.
