Stray Pit Bull Attacks Elementary School Students

Seven children suffered bite wounds and scratches after a stray pit bull got loose inside Lansdowne Elementary School in Charlotte, North Carolina. The ten-month-old dog was spotted near the playground while kids were playing outside during recess. Teachers corralled the students inside as a precaution, but the stray dog managed to find its way into the building.

Once inside the dog became "overstimulated" by the reactions of the children, who were making noise while running away in fear of the pit bull.

"Some of the children were frightened and were reacting by running and making noise. The canine then became overstimulated by this reaction and began to jump on and bite some of the children," Animal Care & Control says.

The dog started biting at the legs of the children and scratching them.

"It was probably one of those things where it was playing, it was jumping up...and it started biting at the legs and things like that."

A teacher was able to contain the pit bull until the owner arrived. Animal Control was able to get in touch with the owner and confirmed the dog's rabies vaccine was up to date. The dog will be quarantined for ten days in accordance with law.

None of the children suffered serious injuries and an ambulance was not called.
