In what was a very around-the-way type of tribute to the Queen of Soul, Madonna spoke highly of Aretha Franklin and attributed the start of her successful career to the singer. As only Madonna can do, she put herself on a pedestal, often confusing the audience as to who the tribute was really for. Was it Madonna praising herself or was she having difficulty getting to how Aretha Franklin shaped her career? I'm going to go with the latter.
Well check out the video and you can get an idea of what I mean. Thank goodness a Billboard correspondent can help you figure it out if you missed it live on the VMAs last night. I guess in the end of her rambling story, the bottom line is Madonna did give Aretha her props. I'm still trying to make sense of Madonna's story, but ironically the soul music icon died on Aug. 16th -- Madonna's 60th birthday.
