Chicago May Become The 4th Largest U.S. City If People Keep Moving Away

Illinois is such a great state, and I'm not just saying that because I live here, I say that because it truly offers a lot of culture, excitement and diversity. If you want to enjoy the country, you can take a ride down south to the capitol in Springfield. Of if you prefer bright lights and the hustle and bustle of the big city, just roll through downtown Chicago. Not to mention all of the suburbs and different cities along the way that offer everything from great restaurants, shopping, the beauty of nature and much more.

But there is a serious exodus happening right now for the state of Illinois. People are moving away to different cities left and right. According to the 2018 U.S. Census Bureau, 86 Illinois counties saw population loss. And Cook County led the nation in a declining population.

There are several reasons why Chicago may eventually have to hand over its title of being the third largest city to Houston, which is currently number four in the country. I've seen several comments on social media that people are moving out of Illinois (and Chicago specifically) because of the violence. There is just way too much crime, they say. And residents are fed up with high property taxes, political corruption and racial injustice too.

Another reason people say they are leaving is because they simply cannot afford to live in Chicago, where the median monthly rent ranges from $1,200-$2500. That is pretty ridiculous, especially for a one or two bedroom apartment.

Whatever happens with the state of Illinois, I just hope things get better all around. I wish for a better education system, homelessness to disappear, more resources for the elderly and disabled, an end to hunger, better relationships with police and civilians, more unity, cleaner neighborhoods, safer neighborhoods, more opportunities and jobs and I could go on and on about what I hope will keep Illinois a great state.
