An armed student was shot by a police officer at Waukesha South High School in Wisconsin on Monday (December 2). Another student told a school resource officer that their classmate was armed, and authorities confronted the 17-year-old hoping to de-escalate the situation.
The school was placed on lockdown as the resource officer isolated the student inside a classroom.
Waukesha police and sheriffâs deputies joined the officer, and they tried to talk to the young suspect.Â
âThe suspect would not remove his hands from his pocket and continued to ignore officersâ commands,â Waukesha Police Chief Russell Jack said. âThe suspect removed his handgun from his waistband and pointed it at the officers."
One of the officers opened fire, striking the teen. The officers performed life-saving medical care on the young man, and he was taken to the hospital where he is listed in stable condition.Â
Officials did not say why the teen brought a gun to school or what charges he will face.
âMy heart is with the students, educators, and staff of Waukesha South High School and the entire Waukesha community as they mourn and endure the trauma of todayâs shooting. I am grateful for our educators and first responders who worked quickly to keep our kids safe and ensure no one else was injured," Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers said in a statement.
