Chicagoan Matthew Cherry Wins Oscar For Film About Black Hair

Another score for Chicago on the Academy Awards beat. Chicagoan and film producer Matthew Cherry won an Oscar for his film, "Hair Love," a story about a black father who learns to do his daughter's hair. He won the award for Best Animated Short film for the 6-minute film.

Not only is Cherry now an acclaimed filmmaker, he is also a former NFL football player. I love how these athletes are sharing their other talents and skills with the world. And props to Cherry for bringing with him to the Hollywood ceremony DeAndre Arnold, a student from Texas who was suspended from school because he wore dreadlocks and he was told he couldn't graduate unless he cut them. This is what we're still doing in 2020? Ridiculous.

Cherry dedicated his Oscar to Kobe Bryant, who also won an Oscar in 2018.
