In what may be a complete shock to some, the head of the Catholic Church is okay with same-sex unions. Pope Francis said that he supports civil unions for same-sex couples.
For many years there have been attempts by the Catholic Church to block marriage equality but now that the Pope has called for these unions, some adjustments may have to be made.
Pope Francis made the comments of equality in a new documentary when asked about his support of the LGBTQ community. According to the Catholic News Agency Pope Francis said, "What we have to create is a civil union law, that way they are legally covered." He went on to say, "Homosexuals have a right to be a part of the family. They’re children of God and have a right to a family. Nobody should be thrown out or be made miserable because of it."
The documentary, titled "Francesco" debuted this week at the Rome Film Festival and highlights the way the Pope cares for and helps the disadvantaged.
