And Just Like That, Chicago Has Its First Black Female Mayor

After weeks of speculation of who would become the next mayor of Chicago, the city has finally elected its first black female mayor who also happens to be openly gay. That's a lot of firsts! Not that sexual orientation means anything, but I mentioned it because my gay friend told me to, and out of respect for the LGBTQ+ community I did.

I was told that being gay and accomplishing a major fete is something that the community is proud of and they want that fact to be known. I listened.

And the fact that Lori Lightfoot at first seemed to be the underdog in becoming Chicago's next mayor has proven some wrong. However, numbers don't lie and Ms. Lightfoot indeed swept through, winning all -- did you hear me say ALL -- of the wards. She beat Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle with more than 70 percent of the vote in unofficial tallies, but she's in there.

This is not only an historic event for the City of Chicago, but it is also historic for black women and gay women around the globe. It gives us hope that just because we are female, or black or gay, we can still accomplish what was once held to be a man's job.

Eventually we will move forward and this sort of history will also be a thing of the past and it will be considered the norm for a black female who is openly gay to win whatever she wants. Welcome to City Hall, Mayor Lightfoot.
