Illinois Schools Will Now Teach LGBTQ History

Gov. J.B. Pritzker recently signed into law a bill that will ensure the contributions of people of the LGBTQ community is being taught in Illinois schools. This move to make sure there is a more inclusive history curriculum is a good one, given the increase in students who are a part of the LGBTQ community.

The move is also two-part because it can increase student's self-image, and hopefully give their classmates a better understanding of the lifestyle and bring acceptance of it. One of the topics will include the country's first gay rights organization -- the Society For Human Rights -- which was formed in Chicago in 1924. Another topic will be about the late astronaut Sally Ride, the first woman from the U.S. who went into space and who was a lesbian.

The bill is scheduled to go into effect in July of 2020.
