South Lake Shore Drive Traffic Moves As Fast As An Expressway

Slow down Chicagoans, Lake Shore Drive is not an expressway.

On several occasions I'll drive northbound on Lake Shore Drive to enjoy the beautiful view of the lake. And obviously during rush hours traffic can be pretty busy. But what is going on with motorists driving 60, 70 and sometimes 80 miles per hour on Lake Shore Drive?

Chicago, let me remind you that it is called Lake Shore DRIVE for a reason. It's a drive, not an expressway. LSD is not the Eisenhower, the Kennedy, the Dan Ryan -- it's none of those, it's a drive. There is no reason why cars should be going in excess of 20 and 30 miles over the posted speed of 45. Why is everyone in such a hurry? One sure way to be on time is to wake up earlier so that you are not rushing to get to where you're going.

Instead of another chance to enjoy the beauty of the lake and skyline, I was nervously driving with two hands and staying as close to the speed limit as possible. Cars were flying by me left and right. We are in Chicago, not in Germany where the posted speed limit is 80 mph on the Autobahn!

So the next time you're driving down Lake Shore Drive, please drive with care and slow down and remember it's a drive, not an expressway.
