The Cicadas Are Back!

The cicadas are back! The cicadas are back! Well, almost.

Don't worry, you'll hear them soon enough, especially if you live in D.C., Maryland, Virginia or North Carolina. This loud, pesky insect makes such a distinct sound that you'll know exactly when they'll arrive in your neighborhood.

More than a billion of the bugs will be waking up and making their way around certain parts of the country, emerging from a once-in-17-year mating season. Usually the insects appear in great broods, however some "stragglers" appear periodically which is why you may have seen the red-eyed insect in some areas.

But researchers say next year is when we will really see lots and lots of cicadas so you've been warned. Get ready for a symphony of annoying chirping sounds.
