Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s Chicago Connection

Like other notable Americans including former president Barack Obama, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once lived in Chicago.

In the mid 60s he was invited by the Chicago Freedom Movement to come to Chicago with his crusade for civil rights. The Chicago Freedom Movement was a group of organizations that worked to get rid of the ghettos and slums and improve living conditions for black people.

In an effort to show his passion for the cause, Dr. King moved his family to the west side where they lived in an apartment at 1550 South Hamlin in North Lawndale. The property is still there, but it's now known as the Dr. King Legacy Apartments.

Sadly, to this day Chicago remains one of the most segregated cities in the country.
