A Twitter blowup leads to big changes in just the last couple of days at the non-profit youth arts organization formerly known as Donda’s House, founded in honor of Kanye West’s mother. It has been announced that while they will carry on their mission to help Chicago’s youth, the organization will no longer carry Dr. West’s name.
We just talked about this on Saturday… Donda’s House released a statement late last week asking for support as they described their struggle with and need to distance themselves from Kanye’s latest controversies. Then, after founding creative director Rhymefest tweeted at Drake for support, Kanye’s wife, Kim Kardashian West jumped into the fray, making it personal and dragging the organization and its leadership, while Rhymefest took the high road. She continued her attacks yesterday, complete with misinformation and innuendo. You can read more details here of how it all started out.
I’m sad that this is what it has come to, but I’m happy that the change is in name only and that Rhymefest and his wife, executive director Donnie Smith, will persevere in continuing their work that celebrates and helps our city’s young people move forward in a positive direction. If you want to get involved, there’s a volunteer meeting Saturday morning at 10am at Dyett HS and you can get more info here.
