Prayers for Alaska today… at 8:30am local time, the 49th state was hit by an earthquake of a preliminary magnitude of 7.0. It was followed by several aftershocks and at least 3 of those were a magnitude 5.0 or greater.
The Sun-Times reports that coastal areas of the southern part of the state are under a tsunami warning, as the earthquake may have produced huge waves further off shore.
The center of the quake was about 7 miles north of Anchorage, the largest city in the state, completely demolishing roads and sending people elsewhere in the city running out of buildings and taking refuge under desks and any safe place they could find. The TransAlaska pipeline was also shut down as a precaution to assess any possible damage.
