Like a lot of people, I reacted with shock and sadness yesterday when I heard that legendary actress Diahann Carroll had passed away after a battle with cancer.
She was a pioneer in every sense of the word… becoming the first black woman to do a LOT of things never done before: the first black woman to win a best actress Tony Award, the first black star to play a role that wasn’t a domestic worker when she starred in her own series, “Julia,” the first black woman to be nominated for a best actress Emmy in a comedy and the first black person to star in a primetime soap opera, when she appeared as Dominique Deveraux on “Dynasty.” She was also a Golden Globe winner and Oscar nominee.
Our world is a little less bright without her and her fans will mourn, but let’s also celebrate her amazing talent and epic life… the very epitome of trailblazing Black Girl Magic! Rest in Power, Ms. Carroll!
