News came out this morning that United States Representative Elijah Cummings had passed away after longstanding health problems. The Baltimore civil rights advocate and House Oversight Committee Chair was a leader of the Trump impeachment inquiry. He was also an early supporter of President Obama’s campaign.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi choked up when addressing the news at her weekly press conference this morning and called Cummings the “North Star” of the House of Representatives, saying, “He was a leader of towering character and integrity, whose stirring voice and steadfast values pushed the Congress and country to rise always to a higher purpose.”
One quote from Congressman Cummings that I’ve seen often today (and love)is:“Our diversity is not our problem. Our diversity is our promise.”
Congressman Cummings was 68 years old and a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. Flags at the Capitol are flying at half-staff today in his honor.
