Black People Magic is about making our voices heard, even if it’s for the very first time… like Shaq & Snoop, and maybe you, too if you’ve never voted before and are planning to do it this year!
Retired NBA Hall-of-Famer Shaquille O’Neal revealed this week that he voted by absentee (mail-in) ballot for the first time in his life. He said after becoming involved in local elections and with former First Lady Michelle Obama on voting initiatives, he couldn’t be a hypocrite and not vote himself.
Snoop also announced this summer that he had registered to vote and recently posted videos helping people to register (which are also hilarious!). He also has a commercial out to encourage voting by mail set to his hit “Drop It Like It’s Hot.”
Some people have tried to shame them for not voting until they’re almost 50, but I say it’s magical on a bunch of different levels. To me, when you decide to vote at whatever age you are, it means you know you have a voice and are ready to use it, you believe in the future and have hope that you can change things for the better by doing that, and that you care. If that’s not magical, I don’t know what is.
So whether you’re voting for the first or 50th time, congratulations… and remember that's just another way to always celebrate your magic! xo
