Will Smith resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences yesterday in the wake of disciplinary action being considered by its board of governors after he slapped and cursed out Chris Rock live at the Oscars ceremony Sunday.
It looks like a pre-emptive move on his part before the Academy decided what they’d do for his violation of the organization’s standards of conduct. Will could have been expelled for 10 years or more from the organization that he’s belonged to since 2001.
Reports say that taking his Best Actor Oscar back was NOT on the table, but the Academy said it wouldn’t even consider honoring the tradition of having him as the category winner return to present next year’s Best Actress Oscar. They’re set to meet again on April 18th to finalize their disciplinary proceedings.
Academy Awards producer Will Packer was on Good Morning America yesterday to talk about what happened behind the scenes… meanwhile, social media is still picking apart the whole thing, including digging up clips on Chris’ history with Jada (watch below).
Here's Will's full statement that was posted on his social media and provided to media outlets:
"I have directly responded to the Academy’s disciplinary hearing notice, and I will fully accept any and all consequences for my conduct. My actions at the 94th Academy Awards presentation were shocking, painful, and inexcusable. The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home. I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. I am heartbroken. I want to put the focus back on those who deserve attention for their achievements and allow the Academy to get back to the incredible work it does to support creativity and artistry in film. So, I am resigning from membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and will accept any further consequences the Board deems appropriate.
Change takes time and I am committed to doing the work to ensure that I never again allow violence to overtake reason."
I also said my piece Sunday night about this whole thing on my social @jmsparrow. Gotta warn you, it’s a little raw… & I’m still wondering why Jada was expected to be gracious of someone mocking her unkindly and why some are blaming her for what others chose to do.
Wishing all of those involved healing, peace and understanding. 🤲🏽🙏🏽
