The next time you’re at Wrigley Field, you’ll see a big part of Black People Magic and history… the Chicago Cubs just unveiled a statue of Hall of Fame pitcher Fergie Jenkins.
Jenkins played for the Cubs from 1966 to 1973 and again from 1982 to 1983. He’s the fourth player to get a statue outside the Friendly Confines, joining Ernie Banks, Billy Williams and Ron Santo, along with broadcaster Harry Caray.
Jenkins, 79, was there to see his statue for the first time with his family and other Cubs greats like Andre Dawson, Ryne Sandberg, Billy Williams and Lee Smith. He said “I want to thank the Ricketts family for this particular day and the statue. And now my dreams have come true.”
The team announced the statue last year on the 50th Anniversary of his 20th Cy Young Award-winning season. He was inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1991 and his No. 31 was retired by the Cubs in 2009.
