Get ready to see something new and amazing on the south side… a statue of gospel great Mahalia Jackson was unveiled yesterday along with the new Mahalia Jackson Court at 79th and State street.
Mahalia was one of the most influential vocalists of all time and is often hailed as history's greatest gospel singer. She sang the National Anthem at John F. Kennedy's Inaugural Ball in 1961 and frequently performed at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s speeches. In fact, she is credited with inspiring Dr. King's “I Have a Dream” speech.
Mahalia Jackson was born in Louisiana, came to Chicago as a teen and was an integral part of the growth of gospel music with Thomas Dorsey here… she passed away in 1972 at the age of 60.
Remember to always celebrate your magic! xo
