Black People Magic: Michelle Obama's Latest Award

The magical Chicagoan and (forever) First Lady Michelle Obama is inspiring young authors with a new literary award in her name… publisher Penguin Random House will award the Michelle Obama Award for Memoir beginning next year.

Inspired by Mrs. Obama’s success with her own writing about her life, the Obama prize will go to a high school senior enrolled in public school for their autobiographical English-language composition… and the honor comes with a $10,000 college scholarship. The other awards that Penguin Random House are using to include more diverse voices in writing, include the Amanda Gorman Award for Poetry and the Maya Angelou Award for Spoken Word.

Mrs. Obama said, “I know firsthand how nerve-wracking it can be to share the most intimate stories from your life with the world. But after publishing my memoir 'Becoming,' I’ve learned that writing your own story can be a powerful tool. That’s why I am so excited about this new award, and I can’t wait to read what this next generation of young writers will share with us all.”

The 2022 competition just opened for submissions on Wednesday, October 12th and they will be accepted through February 1st, 2023 or until 1,000 applications have been reached. Winners will be announced in June. If you know a high school senior who would benefit from this award, all the info and instructions to apply are at this link.

Michelle Obama's new book, “The Light We Carry,” will be out November 15th.

& Remember to always celebrate your magic! xo
