Black People Magic: The Saturday Morning Wake Up Club Tribute to Tina

There is no one more magical than the woman we lost on Wednesday… the Queen of Rock N' Roll, Tina Turner.

Born Anna Mae Bullock from Nutbush, Tennessee… Turner will be remembered among the greatest singers and performers of all time – for her vocals, her swagger and sensuality, and insane stage presence and energy.

In her career, she sold over 100 million records worldwide, received 12 Grammy Awards, 3 Grammy Hall of Fame Awards and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. She was the first black artist and first woman to be on the cover of Rolling Stone. She has stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the St. Louis Walk of Fame. She was twice inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, with Ike Turner in 1991 and as a solo artist in 2021. She was also a 2005 recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors and Women of the Year award.

Everyone from Beyonce to Mick Jagger, Angela Bassett to Diana Ross and all of us in between have been paying tribute and honoring her memory since she died… many joined former President Barack Obama in praising her for being  “unapologetically herself – speaking and singing her truth through joy and pain, triumph and tragedy.”

That last part is the most important thing to me about her legacy and one I think we should all emulate... telling our entire story as she did in all its fullness, with the triumphs over the pain.

Because even with all her talent, awards and well-deserved accolades, the true beauty in her story to me, is how she finally came to share the full power of that talent with the world. It only happened when she came to terms with it, lived it out loud and shared it all with us… no matter what anyone thought or said about it.

When we all do that in our own ways, we can fulfill our purpose on this earth and do more than we ever thought possible. Let’s let that be how we honor Ms. Tina Turner, empowering ourselves and continuing her legacy.

Simply the Best... remember to always celebrate your magic! xo
