Celebrate Father’s Day tomorrow in an active way with the Ricky Byrdsong Memorial Race Against Hate with the YWCA Evanston Northshore.
Ricky Byrdsong made history by becoming the first Black coach of Northwestern’s basketball team and was tragically murdered by a white supremacist in 1999 as he walked through his neighborhood with two of his young children in Skokie. The shooter wounded 7 others and later killed a Korean American grad student in Indiana.
Ricky’s family and friends started this race the following year to honor the coach and father’s legacy and combat hatred.
This is the 23rd year of the race and it’s now one of the largest of its kind… it steps off tomorrow morning at 7:30am and you can still register for the race on site at 6:30am at Floyd Long Field on Sheridan near Central on the north end of Northwestern’s campus.
