The 2024 Paris Summer Olympics is alive with Black People Magic from Team USA!
Simone Biles keeps breaking records and making history! She is now the most-decorated U.S. Olympic gymnast in history with ten medals; 7 of them are gold as of Saturday after her win in the vault competition. She broke an over 50-year old record Thursday, becoming the first woman since 1968 to win multiple all-around gold medals. And at 27, she is also the oldest woman in almost 75 years to secure the all-around title since 1952.
Lauren Scruggs made Olympic history Sunday, winning silver in women’s individual foil fencing, becoming the first American Black woman and first out Black lesbian to earn an individual medal in a women’s fencing event. Scruggs’ success is also a proud moment for her mentor Peter Westbrook, the first Black American to win an Olympic medal in fencing in 1984.
And Fred Richard—known on social media at Frederick Flips—and the U.S. men’s gymnastics team got the bronze on Monday, the team’s first medal in 16 years.
