Black People Magic was shining bright this week as two of our music’s biggest stars received the country’s highest arts honor and made history doing it!
Queen Latifah and Missy Elliott became the first hip hop artists to receive the National Medal of The Arts as President Biden presented them on Monday at the White House. Steven Spielberg, Spike Lee and more than 30 others were also honored along with them. The National Medal of Arts is the highest award given to artists and arts patrons by the federal government. Also getting a big honor Monday… Star Wars and Roots star LeVar Burton received the National Humanities Medal from President Biden. He was honored for his work as an actor and literacy advocate. LeVar served as executive producer of “The Right to Read” documentary, was the famed host of PBS’s “Reading Rainbow,” and has helped shine a spotlight on the deepening literacy crisis facing the country.
