What's Happening This Weekend: Fun Outdoors, Live Comedy, Music & Theater!

It's the last weekend of May and it really feels like summertime Chi as we head into June! Here's some great fun to get into this weekend....

If you want to get outside, the city just got new chairs for the area around Buckingham Fountain modeled after parks in Paris so you can sit a while, admire and enjoy the view! Plus, Six Flags Great America celebrated their 50th anniversary yesterday and have a summer-long celebration kicking off soon!

And today is the first ever Kite Festival at Douglass Park from noon-4pm with fun for the whole family! Bring your kite and picnic blanket to this free event, plus food, music and art-making. And there will also be a limited number of free kites available for those who do not have one.

Lots of comedy this weekend, too:

  • Finesse Mitchell is bringing the laughs to The Improv in Schaumburg, in 2 shows tonight...
  • We Them Ones Comedy Tour returns to Wintrust Arena tonight, starring Mike Epps, Karlous Miller, DC Young Fly, Chico Bean, Tony Roberts, Navv Greene, Just Nesh, and Jayski.
  • Also tonight, it's Jay Davis Presents: Creative Hustle Season 2 an exclusive screening and stand-up/sketch comedy show featuring Chicago comedians, including Damon Williams, Shawn Morgan, Brian “Da Wildcat” Smith, Mike Samp, Mo Good, Calvin Evans, Kristen Toomey, Big Keef, and Fab Monroe. It's all at Hollywood Boulevard Cinema in Woodridge.

Don't miss the new play Covenant in the Owen Theater at the Goodman... it brings great voices to the stage with blues music and a suspenseful mood. It's a compelling, fresh new take on the infamous tale of meeting the devil at the crossroads, written by a Chicago native. The smash run was just extended through June 7th, so don't miss out!

Love live music? Check out the Aretha Franklin Tribute at Haven Entertainment Center in Bronzeville with live performances of the Queen of Soul's biggest hits.

If you like festivals:

  • The 5th Annual Windy City Hot Dog Fest is going on all weekend in Portage Park, with hot-dog-eating contests, live music, a kids’ area and arts-and-crafts vendors.
  • Tomorrow, catch the free Grown-Up Book Fair at 1pm at Wild Blossom Meadery & Winery in Evergreen Park. Browse a selection of books and merch and enjoy a drink from the winery’s wide menu of wine and mead while browsing the selection.

Looking ahead:

From next Saturday, June 6th through August 9th, check out Rhythm of Romance: Babyface & Anita Baker Collective starring Marc Nelson from AZ YET & Boyz II Men as Babyface at Theater 47 in Park Forest.

Whatever you choose, have fun and don’t let me EVER hear you say you don’t have anything to do!
