We’re celebrating the black people magic of this year’s 36th Annual African Festival of the Arts!
Chicago’s celebration of African and African diasporic culture is back this weekend… everything starts today in the historic Washington Park Sunken Garden at 55th and Cottage Grove, running through Monday.
This year’s festival theme, “Crowning the African Spirit,” honors the enduring artistic, cultural, and spiritual traditions that connect people of African descent throughout the world with world music and dance performances, family activities, authentic cuisine, cultural exhibits, interactive workshops and demonstrations.
The festival's big headliners this time around come from every corner of Black music, with Slum Village taking the stage today, then tomorrow features the legendary Queen of Gospel, Shirley Caesar, and Leela James wraps us the festivities on Monday.
The African Festival of the Arts is a production of Africa International House USA, a nonprofit cultural organization founded in Chicago in 1989, dedicated to preserving, promoting, and celebrating the arts, cultures, and histories of Africa and the African diaspora.
And remember to always celebrate your magic too! xo
