First Black Mayor Of Chicago Celebrated For His 100th Birthday

Former Chicago Mayor Harold Washington would have been 100 years old on April 15 and many Chicagoans and dignitaries paid homage to the city's first black mayor. Gov. Pritzker, Mayor Lightfoot and several others paid tribute to Mr. Washington at a centennial celebration Tuesday.

The mayor made history when he was elected as the city's first black mayor in 1983. Throughout Chicago there are statues, buildings, honorary streets and a public library named in his honor. He died in office in 1987.
