There is nothing too new here, just an update on what we've been hearing for the past few years. We all know that retail stores are closing left and right due to internet sales, but it was recently announced that Sears and Kmart will be closing additional stores.
Twenty-one large format Sears stores, and five Kmart stores will close in October. It's sad news to see more of these iconic stores close its doors, but there is some good news too for shoppers like myself. Next week liquidation sales will begin and when stores close their doors for good, there are some amazing sales! But the real good part is that employees will receive severance packages and hopefully they will be able to find employment elsewhere.
None of the Kmart closings will affect stores in Illinois, but the Sears store at Stratford Square Mall in west suburban Bloomingdale will close by year's end.
In addition to Sears and Kmart, Walgreens, which is headquartered in suburban Deerfield, will be closing 200 of its stores in the U.S. and another 200 stores in the U.K.
Blame the internet folks.
