When it comes to fashion, pretty much anything goes. But it looks like iconic fashion house Gucci is under fire yet again, this time for an accessory that resembles an ankle monitor or shackle.
I don't know what to think about this. First it was the blackface sweater several months ago and probably something before that, but I am trying to really look at these situations with an open mind. Was I offended when I saw the accessory? No, not at all. Am I sensitive to subliminal racism that goes on in our society? Yes. I'm very much aware of it too, because I'm exposed to it almost daily.
But for some reason I don't know if I am going to be up in arms with most others about this accessory. I have seen this type of accessory over the years on several occasions. I've even worn shoes that have a top strap that resembles an ankle monitor, and have received lots of compliments on them.
I don't know what the intent really is with Gucci, but I would love to speak with the fashion house's Creative Director Alessandro Michele just to have dialogue on his thoughts about these articles of fashion that seem to keep offending people. Is it intentional? Are people over-sensitive? It's a leather accessory that holds lipstick. I'm hoping that's it and that's all.
