Today marks the 23rd anniversary of the death of one of my favorite rappers ever, and that is the great Notorious B.I.G. Known as Big Poppa, Biggie Smalls, Biggie and so much more, the iconic rapper was gunned down in Los Angeles on this day in 1997.
It was such a shock to me to see the breaking news on MTV as I got ready for church that Sunday 23 years ago. Although there was beef going on in Hip Hop from the east to the west coasts, and 'Pac was killed just six months earlier, I wasn't ready for the news that Biggie died.
It's really unfortunate that his murder hasn't been solved to this day, but in my heart I believe that somebody knows who killed him. But as time continues to pass, hopefully at some point it will be revealed who snuffed out the talented rapper.
I'm happy that Biggie will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in May, and that the world recognizes this lyrical genius who sounded and rapped like none other. Rest in peace Big, and as I promised your mother years ago, I will continue to pay homage to you every time I play one of your songs on my radio show ... "Biggie."
