Childhood Home of Emmett Till Inches Closer To Landmark Status

The childhood home of Emmett Till has been granted preliminary landmark status. The vacant home is located in the Woodlawn neighborhood on the south side at 6427 S. St. Lawrence. Many neighbors did not realize that was the home of Till until they saw camera crews getting footage of the building recently.

The full city council will have to vote to designate the home a landmark. I hope this happens.

Emmett Till was brutally murdered in 1955 while visiting family in Mississippi. He was accused of flirting with a white woman. He was 14 years old at the time. Years later the woman who made the accusations recanted her story.
