Mayor Lori Lightfoot has launched a review process that will determine which statues and other objects throughout the city should be removed. Following all of the racial tension that put statues from different cities in the spotlight because of the racial inequalities exposed last year, this public process will review 41 statues, plaques and works of art.
The fate of four past presidents will also be a part of the process, including Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, George Washington and William McKinley. If you recall, the statues of Christopher Columbus were removed last summer once word got out they probably would have been torn down by protestors.
The goal of this public review process is to eliminate those objects that promote a narrative of white supremacy and/or present just one side of historic facts.
