Two Houston ISD high schools are among the best in the U.S., according to U.S. News & World Report.
Carnegie Vanguard High School jumped from #42 last year to #40 on the national ranking. And DeBakey High School for Health Professions is #43 among STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) high schools and #18 among the nation's magnet high schools.

Elsewhere in Texas, Dallas ISD’s School for the Talented and Gifted came in at #8 nationally, up from #13 last year. It's also the #1 high school in the state and ranks #8 nationally among STEM high schools and #4 among magnet high schools.
Also in the Texas Top 10 are Austin ISD’s Liberal Arts and Science Academy, Dallas ISD’s Judge Barefoot Sanders Law Magnet, BASIS San Antonio's Shavano Campus, San Antonio ISD’s Young Women’s Leadership Academy, and Northside ISD’s Health Careers High School in San Antonio.
U.S. News evaluates high schools each year on six factors: college readiness, reading and math proficiency, reading and math performance, underserved student performance, college curriculum breadth, and graduation rates. In all, more than 17,800 schools were graded.
Topping the national list is Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Arlington, Virginia.
