There's a new program called Bike Chicago and you may be able to receive a new bike! Five-thousand bikes will be given to Chicagoans who are eligible, as part of Mayor Lightfoot's $188 million Chicago Recovery Plan. It's also part of the city's goal to increase affordable and climate friendly mobility options.
The program begins this summer with the first distribution of 500 bicycles and will continue until 5,000 have been distributed through 2026. To be eligible to apply for a bike, the following is required:
- Be a Chicago resident
- Be at least 14 years old
- Have a household income at or below 100% of the Area Median Income for Chicago (for instance, under $104,200 for a family of 4)
- Not a current bike owner
- Live in an area that faces higher mobility hardship
For those under 18 years old, a guardian must be present when picking up the bike and equipment.
